Step 9 / 13

Install Linux

Install Linux onto your computer.

You should only continue if: If anything did not work, stop and go back.

Important warning

This step will erase your current system.

All files on the computer will be removed.

Make sure your backup is complete before continuing.

Step 1 - Start the installer

While still in the Linux test session:

  • Look for an icon on the desktop
  • It will say something like:
    • Install Linux
    • Install (name of system)

Double-click it.

On boot up from USB, you will have many choices in Linux Mint.

Step 2 - Choose your language

Select your language and continue.

Step 3 - Connect to Wi-Fi (if asked)

If prompted:

  • Connect to your Wi-Fi
  • Enter your password

Step 4 - Installation type

You will see options such as:

  • Install alongside Windows
  • Erase disk and install Linux
  • Something else

For this guide, choose:

Erase disk and install Linux

This ensures a clean setup.

The setting shown is the best choice for a clean install of Linux - note: No Windows installation will be left.

Important

Make sure you are selecting the correct disk.

Most users will only see one main drive.

Step 5 - Confirm changes

The installer will warn you that data will be erased.

Confirm to continue.

Step 6 - Choose location and time

Select your location.

This sets time and regional settings.

Step 7 - Create your user account

You will be asked to enter:

  • Your name
  • Computer name
  • Username
  • Password

Keep this simple and easy to remember.

You will use this password to log in and install software later.

This is an important screen to note down - you will always need to remember your username and password. Keep them simple at first, and then change them later when you are ready.

Step 8 - Wait for installation (the screen may flicker, this is normal)

This can take several minutes.

Do not turn off the computer.

Step 9 - Restart (do not remove the USB drive)

When finished, the system will ask you to restart.

Follow the instructions on screen.

Important

When restarting:

Remove the USB drive when prompted.

Only remove it at this stage.

What happens next

Your computer will now start into Linux.

You will check that everything still works after installation.
